Caring for Your Gold & Enamel Memorial Jewelry: A Guide from Tempus Metals

At Tempus Metals, we craft memorial jewelry meant to last for generations—but even the most beautiful heirloom needs a little care now and then. Whether your piece is made with hot glass enamel or cold enamel resin, here’s everything you need to know to keep your gold and enamel jewelry looking its best.

1. Know What It’s Made Of

Our jewelry is crafted from ethically sourced 10k, 14k, or 18k gold. The enamel detailing—either hot glass or cold resin—adds color, durability, and a place for cremation ashes to be fused into your piece.

  • 18k Gold + Hot Glass Enamel

Our most durable option. The enamel is finely ground glass that’s applied to the jewelry and kiln-fired at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass directly to the gold, creating a smooth, vibrant, and long-lasting surface.

  • 10k & 14k Gold + Cold Enamel (Resin)

While visually similar to glass enamel, cold enamel is a resin that’s hand-applied and cured in place. It requires gentler care, as resin is slightly porous and more sensitive to sunlight, heat, and harsh chemicals.

2. Daily Wear Dos & Don’ts

Fine jewelry is made to be worn, but a few simple habits will go a long way in preserving your piece:

Do remove your jewelry before:

  • Lifting weights
  • Gardening
  • Heavy housework
  • Swimming or showering
  • Harsh cleaning products

🚫 Don’t expose your enamel jewelry to:

  • Harsh chemicals
  • Prolonged direct sunlight (especially for cold enamel)
  • Extreme heat for rings made with cold enamel (this includes ultrasonic jewelry cleaners)

3. Cleaning Your Jewelry

  • For 18k Gold with Hot Glass Enamel:
    • Use warm, soapy water and a soft toothbrush to gently clean the surface.
    • This jewelry can also be shipped to Tempus Metals or taken to your trusted local jeweler for professional polishing and cleaning.
  • For 10k & 14k Gold with Cold Enamel:
    • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid soaking, abrasive brushes, or cleaners that contain alcohol or acid.

4. Need a Refresh? We’ve Got You.

Our jewelry is made to last, but life happens. If your enamel gets damaged or your ring needs polishing, just reach out. We’re happy to help with touch-ups or repairs.

We strongly recommend setting aside a small portion of ashes in case future repairs or enamel touch-ups are ever needed.

Your Memories Deserve the Best Care

Memorial jewelry is more than gold and enamel—it holds your memories, your stories, and your love. With just a little care, your Tempus Metals piece will remain a beautiful tribute for generations to come.
